Princess Kaguya is a favorite in our house: it has a beautiful princess, adventure what more can you ask for? I was very pregnant with my first when my Mom took her trip to Okinawa and came home with lots of goodies and one of them was this little book. The girls were delirious with delight when they were able to see the video.
Here is my attempt to a quick synopsis of the story of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter aka Moon Maiden Takes Flight
This is somewhat of a sad story about a little girl found in a bamboo forest and cared for by a loving
couple. 20 years go by and the girl is now a beautiful young woman with many admirers and has a secret. She was sent to earth from her home, the Moon, and must go back and is sad to leave her friends and family on Earth whom she loves dearly. Kaguya derives impossible tasks for her prince suitors to deny approval for marriage. Her love for the Emperor and his proposal is repeatedly denied with the knowledge of her pending return to the Moon. The Emperor sends his warriors to prevent her return. Unfortunately the Heavenly entourage that comes for Kaguya is blinded by a strange bright light. She is given an elixir of immortality to drink and she when dons the cape of feathers her attachment to Earth is eliminated and she is free to return home. Prior to leaving she leaves her parents a gift and a letter with a bit of the elixir for the Emperor.
